You know that feeling when you are home alone and you smell a smoke in your house. First, you check your laptop because you have worked a lot today, and then the kitchen, but you haven’t cooked anything, and then you open the door to check the noise on the street and… Twenty Taiwanese with smartphones in their hands are taking pictures and videos of your house. It is not because of you, as a new foreigner in the town, but because of a neighbor’s house in flames.
Yes, I just moved to the city and I’m that lucky that there is a house in flames on my street. Well, what should I do? Close all the windows and doors, call everybody who I know here, lock the door and watch how local Taiwanese firemen work. After the explosion in the water park five minutes from here with hundreds of injured people, fire brigades take this fire really serious. More than ten fire trucks is pumping water into the hardware store on the corner, full of burning goods.
Nobody was injured and the flame has been extinguished pretty soon. But as you can see in the pictures below the hardware store will be probably closed tomorrow.
Two days later, we got a visit from the fire department. They brought some materials to show us how to prevent a fire and what to do if you are that lucky like me, and you have to evacuate from the house. Better late than never, right? They said the fire was because of some forgotten pot on the stove which was turned on. This is Taiwan.
